What an interesting metaphor.
Given that there are 36m users and only 100s of questions each day, its not surprising that you see those with some time to spare making contributions where they can. I come when I have some spare time.
I have a different perspective of the way to win business - it's based on the Pareto principle - the 80/20 rule - albeit in a quirky way.
"Only 20% of your customer base will be looking to buy at any given time. In order to be one of the first people they speak with/call, you need to say in contact with the other 80% in order win the business."
I'm not sure the inference about networking at work as a time waster is the one I would want to make in the current market. I agree that one needs to have a balanced life where you achieve everything you need to for your "job", personal life and social pursuits.
