Getting leads at a Conference/Trade Show

Alison's Contribution:

It sounds like you're just attending, eg you don't have a stand or an association with the event and aren't speaking at a session.

Regardless of whether it is your competitors or your clients exhibiting, I would:

1. Prepare - (review web site - map and attendee contacts... find out who's going and arrange to meet, take phone, business cards, small notebook, pens)
2. Get the map of the venue and plan my route to get as many as possible - some events let you pre book appointments. If they don't, then come early and schedule the critical ones. The aim of this task it to prevent you from looking like you are wandering around aimlessly. By all means, look lost and ask someone for help; just look like you have a purpose... LOL
3a. Get to the presentations you really want to hear early and strike up a conversation whilst you are waiting for someone to speak.
3b. Hang out at the back of a "How to" and commiserate with another attendee that you can't quite see what they are doing.

[For both, see who attendee and note names down.]

4. Obtain cards from everyone and note on the back why you need to contact them - this is the most important action you can take. If you can't get a card, get whatever you need to stay in contact and write it down.
5. Do a brain dump of all the intelligence. Make a plan. Follow up within a few days. Refer to brain dump as need to reinforce contact... "Remember when we met at the XX?"

Hope this helps,

All the best,

Alison
