How do you recommend someone that has done a service for you?

As Brian has pointed out, one way is to write a recommendation. This will appear on both theirs and your profiles. You can only do this for 1st level contacts. NB these are very hard to change once written.

You can also forward their profile directly. Open their page and send via the link in at the top right hand side of the screen.

There is a third way if you want to do it outside of LinkedIn - just copy their public profile link into your message and people can then click, copy or type it in.
