Interesting question. I've been pondering a few minutes whilst my brain processes it.
I think many people are prone to taking the first available easy answer and not look beyond for a better solution/situation. Yes this pattern is repeated time an time again.
Are we smart enough to get out of major trouble? I too fear that we may not be as clever as we think we are. I'm not sure at this point. I'd like to think that the advances the next generations will make will overcome the mistakes of the past. It will depend on the ability for large numbers of people to work together towards the thought of a goal which is nebulous - sometimes taking the very smallest step called progress.
