how to write a good game review?

Alison's Contribution:

One way to start is to search for games reviews and take the best ideas from them to construct your own format. The deciding factor is "What would you have wanted to know BEFORE you spend £40 on a game?"

Let me ask you, why you are writing? Is the idea to sell games? Is it to do an analysis of game development techniques?

Having done two minutes of research (and relying on my experience) I recommend including the following types of information:

Name of Game
Publisher
Release Date
Number of users (if known)
Headline - 25 words or less
Genre - examples "War Game", "Fantasy adventure"
Buy/Don't By Opinion
Overall rating of criteria - pick a few from the following and do a little graph (so you can compare between games)
- 2d/3d
- background graphics
- animation
- character formation
- mapping
- customised parameters
- controls
- online multiplayer facilities
- skill level development / ability to keep enjoying it

Don't forget to write in a way that your readers will "get", using the words which will either sell the programme, and/or provide the information you need to do comparison ratings.

You get the idea... my son is an avid game player so if you want to get some feedback on your work, I can ask him to take a break from his revision.

Good luck!
