President Obama said, "If you buy a car from Chrysler or General Motors, you will be able to get your car serviced and repaired just like always..."

Alison's Contribution:

As a consumer, I've invested in a car which can do upto 250,00 - 300,000 miles if I keep it in good order and avoid accidents.

Let's see, if I averaged 15,000 miles a year, that would mean the car would wear itself out in about 20 years. Now I don't even come close to a third of that mileage a year, so I'm looking for at least 30 years life out of it.

Given that it is paid for and gets me from A to B on time, I see no need to replace it in the foreseeable future.

I'd love to invest in a greener car - I'm waiting for the prices to come down and to invest in the one which is best for the environment which suits my driving profile.

I live in hope that the automobile industry will figure out that what they produce isn't worth investing in - a bit like buggy whip manufacturers at the turn of the 20th century.

I view the current situation as a natural phenomena which will need to run its course. Like many industries, it will be painful and there will be big losers.

We're capable of making a shift in technology faster than ever. It will take as long as it needs to for people to figure out that the old world order has changed forever. The writing has been on the wall for a number of years. Perhaps this new paradigm could have been entered into more easily if we hadn't had the recession to contend with.

In the current economic climate, whether or not you're struggling to feed your family, the last thing you're likely to invest in is a brand new gas guzzler which will lose 50% of it's value in a year or two.

Regarding the American psyche, there are tough choices out there. Whether McCann won or Obama won, makes no difference - most of the posturing would have been the same. What's needed now is someone to fix the problem, not dwell on differences - particularly differences of style.
