Can significant change be initiated from the bottom/middle of an organization or does it have to come from the top? If it can be bottom-up what does i

Alison's Contribution:

Lots of food for thought. I would like to relate one experience. For those pressed for time, the punch line is

Sometimes it's the smallest step that the whole firm can make together which creates the biggest impact.

Company X knew something was wrong - they were losing the best and brightest ones to lead the firm forward. The commissioned some research which gave them an action plan. The board committed to the change... which involved a lot of behaviour changes at the coal face to create a collaborative environment. Nothing happened; they continued to lose the best.

It was only when the simplest behaviours of the management team were forced to change that they understood the impact they had on the "troops".

It started with the quite visible action that senior management would show up to meetings on time.

Someone finally "got" that although they were busy, the collective downtime cost of keeping their staff waiting for them was impacting the bottom line.

Sometimes it's the smallest step that the whole firm can make together which creates the biggest impact.

Hope this helps.
