How do you increase your ranking, so you come to the top when people search categories related to you? I can't remember whether I had the choice to pi

Good question.

The solution is in your hands which is good. You can change what you say about yourself at anytime - which is great.

Select "Edit My Profile". Set up your profile carefully, using good examples on which to base what you say about your career to date, interests, etc.

Gain recommendations.... Be aware that you cannot change what other people say about you once they are published.

How do you change your ranking in searches - well that depends on how they searched. The best way to appear in lots of results is to

a) use the relevant key words and their variants in your profile
b) get lots of recommendations
c) extend your network - at least with those with thousands of 1st line contacts. It's not necessary to connect with everyone, but the more people you do (who have lots of contacts), the more you will appear in the 2nd level connection status. Please note that LinkedIn limits the number of invitations you can send to 3000, so use them wisely. If you want to build your network, you can always paste your email and/or ask people to invite you to link.

LinkedIn limits the number of results according to account privileges. Free members get to see 100 results, so your aim should be to appear in the 1st 100.

Well that should be enough to get you started. Have fun with it.

All the best,

Alison
