Great question!
I agree with Peter - Reading extends your knowledge, perspective. Putting techniques into practice is essential - even if it only changes your thinking.
However, there is another option - "case book" learning - which is kind of a marriage between book learning and real-world other people's experience.
No Surprise that Edward deBono's books feature highly - Seven Thinking Caps in particular - my son's school uses it for Year 7 - 12...
Also - Peter Senge's books & Workbooks are a great way to marry book learning with case studies. The Fifth Discipline & Workbooks were great in terms of creating learing organisations, Business Performance Improvement insights and as part of facilitation to get teams to work together.
